Stick Welding Cable Length Guide

Choose a practical starting cable size from welding amperage, duty cycle, and the distance from the machine to the work.

How to use the guide

The chart follows Miller's general weld-cable selector guidance. Your machine manual and the cable manufacturer's rating take priority.

1. Start with amperage

Use the welding current you expect to use, not only the machine's maximum nameplate output.

2. Measure one-way reach

Measure from the power source to the work. Select enough length for the electrode lead and the work lead.

3. Check the combined length

Two 25 ft leads create a 50 ft combined circuit. Longer runs generally require larger cable.

Before you order cable

  • Turn the welding power source off before connecting or changing weld-output cables.
  • Confirm the cable size is listed as copper welding cable for the intended duty.
  • Check whether you need a complete set, an electrode lead, a work lead, or bulk cable.
  • Match the connector style, such as Dinse, Tweco-style, or Cam-Lok, to the machine.
  • Confirm the electrode holder, work clamp, lugs, and package length are included.
  • If a cable becomes hot in service, stop and re-check the size, connections, and duty cycle.
